Apple announced iPhone SE, a new 4-inch smartphone that offers a smaller and cheaper option to the company’s flagship iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. The new Apple smartphone is meant to address both the demand for a smaller screen iPhone, as well as the demand for a cheap iPhone. The Apple iPhone SE features are similar to the iPhone 6s but comes with a design and form factor that’s reminiscent of the iPhone 5s.
This is the first iPhone upgrade without a number in its name, and would logically remove it from a yearly update cycle – suggesting it may be a one-off device. The “SE” suffix has reportedly been described by Apple employees as a special edition variation of the iPhone screen size. The iPhone SE is available in silver, space gray, gold and rose gold colors.
The phone has a 4-inch display and the same general dimensions as the iPhone 5s. In fact, the iPhone SE looks almost identical in design to the iPhone 5s, including the chamfered, sharper edges of the device. The only difference is that those edges will be finished in matte, unlike the iPhone 5s.It measures 123.80 x 58.60 x 7.66 (height x width x thickness) and weighs 113.00 grams.
Like most recent iPhones, the SE has a Retina display, but it’s a bit lower resolution than the 6s.The iPhone SE has a 4-inch Retina display, making it perfect for one-handed use. The resolution remains at 1136 x 640, which is the same as the iPhone 5S, with a pixel density of 326ppi.
Apple says,”the most powerful 4‑inch phone ever.” At the heart of the iPhone SE is the 64-bit Apple A9 processor together with the embedded M9 motion co-processor, the same as the iPhone 6S.With 64‑bit desktop-class architecture, the A9 chip brings you spectacular speed and responsiveness.
iOS 9.3 comes out today, and will ship with the little iPhone SE. It includes Night Mode, which changes the coloring and brightness of the display to better suit your eyes in the evening/night and early in the morning. It will also include password-protected (TouchID) Notes, app suggestions in Health and more customized News.
Embedded directly into the A9 chip, the M9 motion coprocessor connects to the accelerometer, compass, and gyroscope for a range of fitness tracking capabilities, such as measuring your steps and distance. Apple claims the tech means the iPhone SE has double the CPU power and three times the GPU muscle of the iPhone 5S. It also makes it easy to activate Siri by simply saying “Hey Siri,” without having to pick up your iPhone. Apple also said that it has been able to reach LTE speeds that are 50 percent faster than previous generations. It also include an NFC chip for Apple Pay.
The iPhone SE has a 12-megapixel rear camera with fast-focus technology, an Apple-designed image signal processor, advanced noise reduction and better face detection – all resulting in sharper, more detailed photos. It has the ability to capture 4K video. This is the same camera you’ve seen on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. There’s a 1.2MP snapper for your selfies and Facetime calls. It includes “True Tone” lighting technology, which momentarily makes the display three times brighter for brighter selfies in low light.
No 3D Touch
The flagship feature on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, which offers deeper interaction with various applications on the iPhone through hard taps and long taps, will not be present on the iPhone SE.
There have also been some improvements to battery life, with the iPhone SE beating the iPhone 5s’ runtime for audio (50 hours vs 40 hours), video (13 hours vs 10 hours), Wi-Fi- and LTE browsing (13 hours vs 10 hours), and 3G talk time (14 hours vs 10 hours).
IPHONE SE VS IPHONE 5S COMPARISON
The iPhone 5S was, and still is, a design icon. It’s easily the most beautiful handset Apple has ever produced, and it’s aged surprisingly well.Apple didn’t mention the resolution of the iPhone SE, so we’re going to take a guess and say it’s the same Retina display seen on past iPhones. That will give it a 1136 x 640 resolution.
Those chamfered edges continue to influence devices today, and the all-metal body still feels great. Many will be thrilled to learn that although the iPhone 5S is being discontinued, its legacy will live on.The iPhone SE looks almost indistinguishable from its departing brother; with the flat back, matte sides and lock-switch on the top.Similarities are rife on the outside, but beneath its glossy frame numerous changes make the iPhone SE a rather unique prospect.
Apple has stuck with the same fantastic camera tech in the iPhone SE that it used in the iPhone 6S, including a 12-megapixel sensor capable of capturing 4K and 240fps slo-motion video. The iPhone 5S has a lower 8-megapixel sensor and maxes out at 1080p video at 30fps.The f/2.2 aperture is the same, but now Apple uses larger pixels that let in more light, making nighttime shots look much brighter and less muddy. You’ll also be able to capture moving Live Photos, a feature not available on the iPhone 5S.
Both phones use a dual-tone LED flash for supposedly softer and natural skin tones. Both still fail to make much of an impact in this regard – but this sort of sums up phone flashes in general. The iPhone 5S has 1GB, the iPhone 6S has 2GB and we really hope the SE follows suit.Particularly annoyingabout the iPhone SE is that it still has a base storage of 16GB, exactly the same as the 5S when it came out in 2013. Apps, games and media in general are far more sizeable these days and 16GB just isn’t enough.
However, Apple will sell you a 64GB version of the iPhone SE, which we’d thoroughly recommend. Upon release the iPhone 5S was also available in a 32GB variety. Both phones have a Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the home button, although we’re hoping that the iPhone SE version will be much faster and use the same sensor as the iPhone 6S.
