Apple finally announced a new 4-inch iPhone, following months and months of rumours. The iPhone SE was unveiled at an event in Cupertino in March and it replaces the existing iPhone 5S. Apple’s iPhone SE is a combination of an iPhone 5S exterior with many internals from the current iPhone 6S flagship.
For those who are still looking for the difference in features and specifications of iPhone SE and iPhone 6S, we are here to help. Our comparative review looks at how both phones stack up against each other in terms of their price, performance and features.
iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S: Design
The new iPhone SE is visually almost identical to the old iPhone 5S and even its measurements are virtually identical but with a couple of changes, including matte edges a colour matched stainless steel Apple logo. An aluminium body is featured and it measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm(4 inch), making it a little thicker than iPhone 6S. It is significantly lighter though, hitting the scales at just 113g. On the other hand the iPhone 6S measures 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1mm(4.7 inch) and hits the scales at 143g.
iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S: Display
The iPhone SE features a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS display offering a screen resolution of 640×1136 pixels and a pixel density of 326ppi, which is same as the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6s features a 4.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display offering a 750×1334 pixels screen resolution at 326ppi pixel density. Both the bigger display and higher resolution should make the iPhone 6s a better device for text consumption and Internet browsing. The new iPhone SE also missed out on 3D Touch display as it doesn’t include the Taptic Engine, which was introduced by Apple last year. The iPhone 6s was the first phone featuring the Taptic Engine.
iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S: Hardware
iPhone SE is built with powerful 64-bit A9 processor chipset and an embedded M9 motion coprocessor with Dual-core 1.84 GHz Twister and PowerVR GT7600 (six-core graphics),which is same as iPhone 6S.
Due to having a smaller size, it comes to no surprise that the iPhone SE’s battery is smaller at 1642mAh versus the iPhone 6s’ bigger 1715mAh. The iPhone SE’s battery life is slightly better, due to its smaller screen size, which will naturally draw less power.
The iPhone SE features with 2GB RAM and are available with 16/64GB internal storage. On the other hand iPhone 6s features with 2GB RAM and are available in three variants 16/64/128GB internal storage.
iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S: Camera
iPhone SE comes with 12-megapixel rear camera with 1.22-micron pixels and f/2.2 aperture, same as the iPhone 6s. The iPhone SE also comes with several features such as Live Photos, sapphire crystal lens cover, true tone flash, autofocus with focus pixels, face detection, Panorama (up to 63 megapixels), and auto image stabilisation features that were first seen on the iPhone 6s.
One of the biggest differences between the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s is in the front camera. The iPhone SE sports a 1.2-megapixel front FaceTime camera, while the iPhone 6s comes with a 5-megapixel FaceTime camera. The iPhone SE however retains the Retina Flash feature from the iPhone 6s.
iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S: Software and Specs
The new iPhone SE features with iOS 9.3, whereas iPhone 6S comes with iOS 9 and upgradable to 9.3.
The new iPhone SE also missed out on 3D Touch display as it doesn’t include the Taptic Engine, which was introduced by Apple last year. The iPhone 6s was the first phone featuring the Taptic Engine.
The iPhone SE also supports Apple Pay so no difference among these two. Other features seen in the iPhone 6s that are missing from the iPhone SE include Dual-Domain pixels, a barometer, and LTE Advanced connectivity.
iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S: Price
iPhone SE is available at $399 (approximately Rs. 27,000) for the 16GB model while the 64GB variant will come at $499 (approximately Rs. 33,000). The iPhone 6S is costly compared to iPhone SE which is available at $649 for the 16GB model, $749 for the 64GB model and $849 for the 128GB model.
iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S: Which is better?
The answer to that question depends on your priorities. If you want a cheaper phone, the SE is the obvious choice. If you prefer a larger screen the 6S is better. If you just can’t live without a Force Touch screen, don’t choose iPhone SE. However, we are impressed with the price point at which the new 4inch iPhone SE has similar features as iPhone 6S and comes at cheap price compared to iPhone SE.
